His Majesty the
Sultan is the head of the state and its president and the supreme and final
authority for it, and he is the supreme commander of the armed force.
Article 42 of
the Basic Law of the State defines the tasks that His Majesty will carry out.
Sultan Haitham bin Tariq, may God protect him, was born in the city of Muscat
on the “Hijri Date” corresponding to the
eleventh of October 1955 AD.
Sultan Haitham bin Tariq received his primary education at the Saidia School in
Muscat. His father, the late Mr. Tariq bin Taimur, was keen that his children
receive modern education. His Majesty Sultan Haitham enrolled in a Lebanese
school, “Burmana High School” to receive education in the preparatory stage.
Sultan Haitham bin Tariq - may God protect him - did not stay in Beirut for
long, as he left it in 1972 for the United Kingdom to continue his secondary
studies and then university, where he joined one of the most prestigious
universities in the world, Oxford University at Pembroke College in Oxford.
Sultan Haitham bin Tariq has wide interests, including sports, as he headed the
first Omani Football Association during the period from 1983 to 1986, a stage
that witnessed the establishment of many organizational aspects in the work of
football and sports clubs in the Sultanate.
During this time period, the Sultanate hosted
the seventh Gulf Cup, and His Majesty also chaired the organizing committee for
the second Asian Beach Games hosted by the Sultanate in 2010.

career, His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tariq received several sultan's
decorations, foremost of which is the Russouk Medal, which he received from
Sultan Qaboos bin Said, may his soul rest in peace, in November 2010, in
addition to the Al Said Medal, the Oman Medal and the Omani Renaissance Medal.
In March of
2001, he was awarded the Grand Medal of Honor for the services provided by the
Republic of Austria, and in December of 2006 he received from the Kingdom of
Saudi Arabia the First Class King Abdul Aziz Sash, and in November of 2010 he
was awarded a medal from the United Kingdom. Honorary Grand Knight of the Royal

Sultan Haitham bin Tariq, may God protect him, assumed power in the country on
January 11, 2020, succeeding the late Sultan Qaboos bin Said bin Taimur, may
God rest his soul, in a smooth transition of rule in the Sultanate that was
appreciated and admired by the world.
In his first
speech after his inauguration as Sultan of the country, His Majesty Sultan
Haitham bin Tariq, may God protect him, affirmed that he will be imitated by
the luminous steps of the late Sultan, who tread them with firmness and
determination to the future, preserving what he accomplished and building upon
He also affirmed
that he will follow in the footsteps of the late Sultan in foreign policy,
stressing the constants he outlined for the Sultanate's foreign policy based on
peaceful coexistence between nations and peoples, good neighborliness,
non-interference in the internal affairs of others and respect for the
sovereignty of states.

career, Sultan Haitham bin Tariq, may God honor him, held several positions. It
is no coincidence that the late Sultan, "may God rest his soul,"
appoints His Majesty Sultan Haitham in the two most important schools that can
prepare a man worthy of Oman's leadership: the Diplomacy School when he joined
the Omani Ministry of Foreign Affairs and rose to the position of
Secretary-General of the Ministry.
As for the second school, it was the Heritage
and Culture School, when he worked as Minister of Heritage and Culture for
nearly 18 years, during which he approached the greatness of Omani history as a
heritage and culture, and knew closely the history of the country.
His Majesty, may God preserve him, chaired
several committees, the most important of which is the main committee for the
future vision of Amman 2040.
