Fourteen Shipwrecks Uncovered in Bahamas
Nassau, 25 Feb (ONA) --- In a significant discovery in the northern Bahamas, a new chapter of transatlantic voyages during the 18th and 19th centuries has been unveiled.
Led by British marine archaeologist Carl Allen, the Bahamas Lost Ships Project has revealed 14 shipwrecks, shedding light on an undisclosed maritime route referred to as the "highway to horror."
Dating from 1704 to 1887, these wrecks were crucial in transporting goods between New Providence, Cuba, and New Orleans.
The Bahamas Lost Ships Project has meticulously documented maritime artifacts, identifying a total of 596 wrecks in the Greater Abaco region.
The vessels varied in size, with some carrying as few as 15 individuals, while others accommodated up to 400 people.
The findings from this discovery will be shared in the Ocean Dispatches series, contributing significantly to comprehension of the intricate maritime history of the Caribbean.
