9 Injured in 6.6-Magnitude Earthquake West Japan
Tokyo, 18 Apr (ONA) --- At least nine people were injured as a result of 6.6-magnitude earthquake which struck several prefectures in western Japan last night.
Officials from the Japan Meteorological Agency said that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 39 km, injuring nine people with minor injuries, as they were taken to hospital, according to (Kyodo) News Agency.
The earthquake's magnitude was in the lower range of 6 on the Japanese seismic scale, which ranges from 0 to 7, in parts of Ehime and Kochi Prefectures, and in the lower range of 5 in parts of Oita Prefecture, Kyodo said.
Japan is located at the meeting point of four tectonic plates, making it particularly vulnerable to seismic activity. It is also home to 100 active volcanoes.
In 2011, a 9.0-magnitude earthquake rocked Japan and triggered a tsunami, killing more than 15,000 people, and causing a disaster at Fukushima nuclear plant.
