Nearly 140 Dead after Heavy Rainfall in Pakistan, Afghanistan
Islamabad, 18 Apr (ONA) --- The death toll from storms in Afghanistan and Pakistan has risen to at least 137 in the past few days and more heavy rainfall is expected in some areas.
At least 67 people in Pakistan have died, according to the country's disaster control authority today, amid unusually heavy rainfall for the time of year.
A state of emergency was declared in the southern city of Karachi. The city is vulnerable to the effects of storms.
InAfghanistan, some 70 people have died and 56 were injured in heavy rains and flooding nationwide and 2,627 houses were damaged, the National Disaster Management Authority said today.
Over the past few months in Afghanistan, heavy snow and rainfall have caused many deaths and injuries following an unusually mild winter.
Extreme weather events such as floods and droughts are on the rise in Afghanistan and Pakistan due to climate change, according to meteorologists.
