Guatemala’s Volcano of Fire Erupts, Forcing Mass Evacuations

Guatemala City, 11 Mar (ONA) --- Guatemala’s Volcano of Fire erupted, prompting authorities to evacuate nearly 300 families and warn that 30,000 more people could be at risk.

The eruption sent gas and ash high into the sky, forcing school closures and the shutdown of a key road. Local authorities fear lahars—deadly flows of ash, mud, and debris—could endanger nearby communities.

The 12,300-foot (3,763-meter) volcano, one of Central America’s most active, last erupted in June 2023. In 2018, a major eruption killed 194 people and left 234 missing.

Local authorities expect volcanic activity to intensify. The volcano is located 33 miles (53 km) from Guatemala City.
