Indonesia's Lewotobi Volcano Erupts, Triggers Alert

Jakarta, 12 May (ONA) --- The Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki volcano on Indonesia's remote island of Flores erupted again, sending an ash column 300 meters high and prompting authorities to issue strict warnings to residents to stay away from the designated danger zone.

The ash plume reached approximately 1,884 meters above sea level, with the eruption recorded on a seismograph showing a maximum amplitude of 2.9 millimeters and lasting about one minute and 55 seconds.

The eruption was confirmed by a monitoring officer of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Herman, who noted that the thick gray ash column drifted toward the north and northeast.

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is currently under Level III (Alert) status. Authorities have advised residents and visitors to avoid all activities within a six-kilometer radius of the volcano's crater. They also warned of the risk of rain-induced cold lava floods in rivers flowing from the volcano's summit during periods of heavy rainfall.

In a previous eruption in November 2024, Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki claimed the lives of nine people and injured dozens.
