Australia Braces for Catastrophic Fire Threat as Nationwide Heatwave Intensifies
Canberra, 8 Jan 2026 (ONA) --- A severe and widespread heatwave is sweeping across Australia, prompting officials to issue dire warnings of "catastrophic" fire danger for tomorrow (Friday). Extreme heat conditions have been declared in every state and territory except Queensland, with elevated temperatures forecast to persist for days.
The state of Victoria faces the most immediate threat, declaring a total fire ban as fire danger ratings are set to reach the highest possible "catastrophic" level. In response, approximately 450 schools and childcare centers will be closed as a precaution.
Meteorologists warn that the convergence of intense heat and heightened fire risk could produce the most significant conditions since the catastrophic Black Summer bushfires of six years ago. That devastating season remains Australia's most severe on record, resulting in dozens of fatalities and burning tens of millions of hectares.
A formal heatwave is declared when both minimum and maximum temperatures remain unusually high for at least three consecutive days. Authorities are urging residents in high-risk areas to enact their bushfire survival plans immediately.
