Duqm Expands Green Spaces with Integrated Afforestation Plans
Duqm, 12 Aug (ONA) --- The Special Economic Zone at Duqm (SEZAD) implemented integrated afforestation plans to increase its green spaces during the period from 2015 to mid-2025.
During the preparatory phase (2015–2021), 3,414 trees and 24,760 square meters of green areas were planted, and modern irrigation systems were installed at several sites. Additionally, projects were carried out to connect these sites to treated wastewater networks, which contributed to reusing treated water, reducing fresh water consumption, and lowering operating costs. The work included afforesting major roads such as Sultan Said bin Taimur Street, Sai Street, and the Tourist Street.
The first phase (2021–2025) saw significant expansion, with 8,398 trees planted and green areas covering 24,144 square meters, all equipped with modern irrigation systems. The first agricultural nursery in Duqm was also established on an area of 5,000 square meters to produce thousands of seedlings annually to support afforestation projects, replace affected trees, and encourage green initiatives. The projects included vital locations such as Sultan Qaboos bin Said Street, Airport Street, the commercial district park in Sai, and the beach park in the tourist area.

The total number of trees planted during both phases reached 11,812, and nearly 48,904 square meters of green areas were created, with an implementation cost of approximately RO 4.4 million.
Eng. Ibrahim Zaher Al Rawahi, Head of the Afforestation and Parks Department at SEZAD, explained that these efforts are part of a comprehensive vision to enhance green spaces and improve the quality of life in the zone. He noted that this contributes to moderating the local climate, mitigating the effects of sandy winds, and providing a natural outlet for residents, visitors, and investors, in addition to promoting environmental sustainability by using treated wastewater for irrigation.
He pointed out that the next phase will involve implementing broader afforestation projects and connecting additional sites to sustainable irrigation systems, solidifying Duqm's position as a modern city with integrated facilities and an environment attractive for living and investment.

He affirmed that the expansion of green spaces not only improves the local environment but also enhances Duqm's appeal as a promising tourist and investment destination. The planted areas and public parks provide a comfortable and safe environment for family activities and community events, while also supporting the tourism and hotel projects in the region, reflecting the integration of urban planning with a focus on environmental sustainability.
