Oman Celebrates World Wetlands Day

Muscat, 2 Feb (ONA) --- The Sultanate of Oman today marked the World Wetlands Day, which falls on 2 February, under the theme “It’s Time for Wetlands Restoration”. The celebration sheds light on measures undertaken to recover the vitality of humid lands.

On this occasion, the Environment Authority organized a workshop under the same theme to highlight Oman’s efforts to protect wetlands. A number of government and private establishments took part in the workshop with the aim of ensuring the safety of natural habitats, notably wetlands, in Oman.

The Ramsar Convention on wetlands is the earliest and still the only international agreement in the field of the environment protection. It serves as a framework for national and international cooperation in protecting wetlands resources.

The agreement was drafted in 1971 in the Iranian city of Ramsar and it became effective on 21 December 1975. It is unique in the sense that it deals with a specific environmental system.

The pact also seeks to encourage the rational use of wetlands in a manner that preserves their sustainability at local and global levels.
