Environment Authority Publishes Report on Combating Invasive Birds
Muscat, 8 Feb (ONA)—A team participating in the National Campaign on Combating Invasive Birds managed to remove 35,154 invasive birds between 13 December 2022 and 1 February 2023.
The national campaign was launched in the Dhofar Governorate and it will last for several months of this year. It will also cover other governorates like Muscat and North Al Batinah.
The report pointed to the elimination of 25,786 myna birds, 9,368 Indian crows in the wilayats of Salalah, Taqa, Mirbat and Sadah, Dhofar Governorate.
Invasive intrusive birds influence the ecosystem in a negative way. They cause biological imbalance by disrupting the natural food chains. They also transfer diseases, like bird flu, and destroy agricultural crops, fruits and orchards.
The Environment Authority’s team reported the sighting of 57 species of wild invasive birds that were not registered before. The campaign was termed a success, as it met its targets of restoring balance to the natural ecosystem.
