Oman Takes Active Role in 69th Session of UN Commission on Status of Women in New York
New York, 13 Mar (ONA) --- Represented by the Ministry of Social Development, the Sultanate of Oman continues to participate in the 69th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69), being held in New York.
The session focuses on "Reviewing and Appraising the Implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action” after 30 Years since the declaration was first endorsed. The session, which began on 10 March, will continue until 21 March 2025 .
Dr. Laila Ahmed Al Najjar, Minister of Social Development, who heads the Sultanate of Oman's delegation to the current session, affirmed that Oman has accorded great attention to the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action since its inception in 1995.
She added that, through its plans and programmes, took practical steps to prioritize the 12 basic areas of the Declaration, with the prime objective of achieving gender equality.
Dr. Laila pointed out that Omani women achieved high rates of enrollment in education (97.7 percent in 2024) and higher education (66 percent in 2023), while the percentage of female graduates in scientific specializations rose to 50 percent.
She added that health indicators show that life expectancy for females at birth remained stable at approximately 79 years between 2019 and 2023.
Speaking about economic support and empowerment, the minister pointed out that Omani women’s participation in the workforce grew to 34.9 percent in 2023.
Acting in cooperation with the Arab League, the Sultanate of Oman held a side event titled "Arab Women: Innovation in the Era of the Industrial Revolution."
The event reflected the Sultanate of Oman's keenness in participating in global events and efforts to empower women, said Dr. Laila at the event. She valued Arab League’s cooperation in organizing the event, which concludes programmes that stem from “Muscat as the Capital of Arab Women for 2024”.
Oman’s participation in the UN session included a visual presentation on Oman’s major legislative developments and statistical indicators on women’s status, the best initiatives and some success stories of Omani women in the field of innovation.
