Workshop Discusses Governance, Mechanisms for Designating Measurement, Calibration Laboratories

Muscat, 20 Jan 2026 (ONA) --- The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, in cooperation with the GCC Standardization Organization (GSO), organized a workshop today on the designation of measurement and calibration laboratories. The event saw participation from relevant entities across the industrial, health, service, and regulatory sectors, as part of the Ministry’s efforts to strengthen national partnerships and develop the metrological infrastructure in the Sultanate of Oman.

Imad Khamis Al Shukaili, Director General of Standards and Metrology at the Ministry, emphasized that the workshop aims to highlight the responsibilities of relevant laboratories and the services they provide in disseminating International System of Units (SI). He noted that the session serves as a continuation of the achievements realized in 2025, during which 970 devices and equipment were calibrated at the National Laboratory for Measurement and Calibration. Additionally, more than 2,300 scales and liquid fuel pumps were verified, generating a total revenue of RO 16,500.

In his speech, Al Shukaili explained that the workshop represents a qualitative leap in developing national technical capabilities and investing available resources to serve economic development goals. He pointed out that these efforts enhance the competitiveness of Omani products and services in regional and international markets, protect consumers, and ensure measurement quality according to the highest global standards. This, in turn, bolsters international community confidence in the national metrological infrastructure and solidifies Oman’s presence on the global stage as an active partner in the international metrological system.

The workshop discussed the governance and mechanisms for designating measurement and calibration laboratories within the framework of International Mutual Recognition. This framework enables the Sultanate of Oman to participate effectively in the global metrological community and establishes its position as a leading country in this vital field.

The session was held within the context of implementing the Law of Measurement and Calibration (17/2013) and activating the role of the National Center for Measurement and Calibration—under the Directorate General of Standards and Metrology—in completing the International System of Units. These efforts contribute to building a reliable and internationally recognized national metrological infrastructure, reinforcing the Ministry's commitment to instilling the concepts of measurement and calibration and providing high-reliability services across various sectors.
