Mallorca Stun Injury-hit Real Madrid at Son Moix in LaLiga
Madrid, 5 Feb (ONA) —- Nacho Fernandez own goal early in the game was enough for a solid Mallorca to grab a hard-fought 1-0 victory over an injury-hit Real Madrid in the Spanish LaLiga.
Los Blancos took to the Son Moix pitch without some key players, as Karim Benzema, Eder Militao and Thibaut Courtois all missed out on today’s duel through injuries.
Meanwhile, the coach of Real Madrid Carlo Ancelotti decided to rest starters Luka Modric and Toni Kroos, both of whom dropped to the bench. As a result, Real Madrid struggled to create in the final third before the break.
In fact, it was Mallorca who managed to open the scoring just 13 minutes into the game, when the Spanish defender Fernandez accidentally headed the ball into his own goal after a cross put into the hosts box, the Spanish MARCA newspaper reported.
Real Madrid pushed for an equalizer after the break, with Vinicius Junior winning a penalty but Marco Asensio failing to beat Predrag Rajkovic from the spot just before the hour mark.
Kroos, Mariano Diaz and Modric came off the bench along with David Alaba, who has just recovered from injury, but Los Blancos could not find ways to break down Mallorca's compact five-man defence.
Antonio Rudiger even played upfront in the last 10 minutes, as Real Madrid pinned Mallorca back to their box and tried to level the scores by putting numerous crosses into Rajkovic's box.
Following their third LaLiga Santander defeat this season, Los Blancos remain second, five points behind leaders Barcelona, who could extend their lead should they avoid defeat against Sevilla at the Camp Nou tonight. As for Mallorca, they sit 10th with 28 from 20 games.
