Manchester United Sacks Ruben Amorim After 14 Months in Charge

Manchester, 5 Jan 2025 (ONA) --- Manchester United have terminated the contract of manager Ruben Amorim, ending his tenure after just 14 months in charge at Old Trafford.

The club announced the decision today, one day after a 1-1 draw with Leeds United and following public comments from the 40-year-old Portuguese that hinted at a strained relationship with the club's hierarchy. Amorim had suggested he lacked full backing in the transfer market and expressed a desire to operate as a "manager, not just the coach," while indicating he was prepared to leave when his contract expired.

Appointed in November 2024 after United paid Sporting CP a reported €11 million to activate his release clause, Amorim departs with a record of 25 wins from 63 matches. His reign stands as the shortest for a permanent United manager since David Moyes was dismissed in 2014.

Former club technical director and midfielder Darren Fletcher has been placed in interim charge. The 41-year-old Scot, who currently serves as the under-18s head coach, will lead the team for Wednesday’s Premier League fixture against Burnley. Fletcher, a five-time Premier League winner with United, is scheduled to hold a pre-match press conference this Tuesday.

The search for a permanent successor is now underway as the club looks to stabilize its direction following a turbulent spell.
