"Istanbul Modern” Museum Becomes First Dedicated Modern, Contemporary Art Space

Istanbul, 16 Jun (ONA) --- The “Istanbul Modern" building has been recognized as Turkey's first museum of modern and contemporary art, earning the prestigious "Building of the Year 2024" award in the cultural architecture category.

Located on the European shore of Istanbul, Turkey's largest city, the museum stands out for its striking design.

It has quickly become a cultural and social hub for both residents and visitors. Its vast, light-filled halls host a dynamic collection of temporary exhibitions, educational programs, film screenings, and an extensive art collection spanning from 1945 to the present day. The museum showcases works by renowned international artists, reflecting Turkey's creative contributions to the global art movement.

In a statement to Oman News Agency (ONA), Zafar Yilmaz, Istanbul Municipality's cultural affairs official, described the museum's architecture as "transparent," fostering a connection between the local community and the city's cultural and tourist landmarks.

"Designed by the award-winning Italian architect Renzo Piano, a pioneer of modern architecture, the museum draws inspiration from the waters of the Bosphorus," he added. The structure extends along the Karaköy waterfront, one of Istanbul’s most prestigious historic districts, where the Bosphorus Strait meets the Golden Horn.

The museum also features a 156-seat auditorium for film screenings and multidisciplinary events, along with a unique rooftop terrace. Visitors flock to this vantage point for panoramic 360-degree views of the Bosphorus and the city skyline, making it a prime spot for photography.
