Eye Scans Can Provide Crucial Insights into Kidney Health: Study
London, 5 Dec (ONA) --- Researchers at the University of Edinburgh have found that 3D eye scans could offer crucial insights into kidney health, potentially revolutionizing the monitoring of kidney disease.
The scans, using a technology called optical coherence tomography (OCT), focus on the retina and can detect changes related to microvascular circulation—a key process affected in kidney disease.
The study, involving 204 patients at different kidney disease stages and 86 healthy volunteers, revealed that patients with chronic kidney disease had thinner retinas, and thinning progressed as kidney function declined.
This technology may aid early detection, monitoring, and drug development, though further studies are needed before routine use.
